This page is an outline for a 1 year high-school level Chemistry course. The textbook used for the course is Basic Chemistry, 5th Edition by Timberlake and Timberlake. The course outline and dates are set for the 2024-2025 school year, but can be easily modified for your own school year. Instructional videos are hosted locally (to avoid YouTube, ads, and “suggested videos”), and online homework is linked to ADAPT (by LibreTexts). If you found this page and are not enrolled in a course with Prof. Clements, you will not have access to the ADAPT homework assignments, but will have access to the videos.

The general organization of the homeschool class will be that you 1) Read new material and watch videos on new material, 2) Attend class and ask questions and practice the material, 3) Try homework on the new material and take a quiz in the next class period.

Week 1 (9/6/2024 – 9/13/2024) – Welcome!

Welcome to Chemistry from a Catholic Perspective!

For this week, you will want to read Chapter 1 – Chemistry in Our Lives

There is no homework this week. Yeah! However, I do recommend that you look through the end of chapter questions. Be sure that you understand what is being asked, and how to solve the problems. Answers for the odd numbered problems are given at the end of the chapter.

You will want to create an account with ADAPT and try to get into the course. The course code is on your syllabus.

Week 2 (9/13/2024 – 9/20/2024) – Numbers and Measurements

For this week, to be prepared for class on 9/20, you will read the first part of Chapter 1 – Chemistry and Measurements. Read sections 2.1 – 2.4 (pages 27-43). For practice with the material, try to answer the odd numbered questions at the end of each section. The answers are given at the end of the chapter.

Watch the following videos. During the videos, there are questions that are posed. It is highly, highly, highly suggested that you pause the video and take the time to try and answer the question before continuing. This will help you know how you are understanding the material. There is a big difference between watching someone solve a problem and solving it yourself!

  1. Numbers and measurements, part 1, math review and using your calculator
  2. Numbers and measurements, part 2, units
  3. Numbers and measurements, part 3 scientific notation
  4. Numbers and measurements, part 4 significant figures
  5. Numbers and measurements, part 4b exact and counted numbers
  6. Numbers and measurements, part 5, math with significant figures

Start your ADAPT homework. In the Chapter 1 assignments, you will want to do problems 1-4. Note that the due date for the ADAPT homework is not until week 3, but the DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

Week 3 (9/20/2024 – 9/27/2024) – Numbers and Measurements

For this week, to be prepared for class on 9/27, you will read the rest of Chapter 1 – Chemistry and Measurements. Read sections 2.5 – 2.6 (pages 43-60).

  1. Numbers and measurements, part 6, conversions and dimensional analysis
  2. Numbers and measurements, part 7, conversion with fractions and multi step conversions
  3. Numbers and measurements, part 8, metric units and metric unit prefixes

Finish the ADAPT homework for Chapter 1, which is due by class time on 9/27. The DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

Week 4 (9/27/2024 – 10/4/2024) – Matter and Energy

For this week, to be prepared for class on 10/4, you will read the first part of Chapter 3 – Matter and Energy. Read sections 3.1 – 3.4 (pages 69-83).

  1. Matter and energy, part 1, classifying matter
  2. Matter and energy, part 2, states of matter
  3. Matter and energy, part 3, chemical and physical properties and changes
  4. Matter and energy, part 4, energy units and temperature units

Start the ADAPT homework for Chapter 3. Do problems 1-7. Problems 1-4 are on matter and energy, and problems 5-7 are on density (which you covered in the last chapter). If you get ahead in the videos for next week, please note that you do not need to do ADAPT problems 11, 12, 13, or 14. I apologize for this, but by the time I figured out those problems were not necessary, the system had locked the assignment because it was opened to students. The DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

Week 5 (10/4/2024 – 10/11/2024) – Matter and Energy

For this week, to be prepared for class on 10/11, you will continue with some work on Chapter 3 – Matter and Energy. Read sections 3.5 – 3.6 (pages 85-91). On October 11, we will be doing our first lab! The lab will involve the material that you are studying this week (specific heat and the energy of temperature change).

Watch the following videos. During the videos, there are questions that are posed. It is highly, highly, highly suggested that you pause the video and take the time to try and answer the question before continuing. This will help you know how you are understanding the material. There is a big difference between watching someone solve a problem and solving it yourself!

  1. Matter and energy, part 7, specific heat and the energy of temperature change (14 minutes)
  2. Matter and energy, part 8, food energy (6 minutes)

(Note that we are skipping my video #5 and #6.) Finish the ADAPT homework for Chapter 3. Do problems 8, 9, and 10. Please note that you do not need to do ADAPT problems 11, 12, 13, or 14. I apologize for this, but by the time I figured out those problems were not necessary, the system had locked the assignment because it was opened to students. The DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

A note about managing your time in the class. My suggestion is always to do the following:

  1. Show up to class!
  2. Watch the videos
  3. Read the textbook
  4. Work on ADAPT
  5. Work on the paper homework
  6. If there are items that you were struggling with, work on some end-of-section problems or end-of-chapter problems from the book

Notice that #6 is listed as “if”. For certain subjects, the concepts and/or math will come fairly easily. For others it takes more effort. Gauge from your homework and ADAPT how you are doing, and do extra work when you think you need it.

Week 6 (10/11/2024 – 10/18/2024) – Lab 1 and Atoms and Elements

Yeah! This week is lab! On October 11, we will be doing our first lab where you’ll actually get to measure things and then calculate things from those measurements. Lab is always a lot of fun. You’ll get some goggles to keep you safe and you’ll get a lab notebook to write your data and observations in. Please wear shoes that cover your feet and long pants.

After the lab is done, you will have some data that you will use for calculations. This will be your homework for the week.

For this week, to be prepared for class on 10/18, you will start work on Chapter 4 – Atoms and Elements. Read sections 4.1-4.4 (pages 102-117).

  1. Atoms and Elements Part 1 of 6: About elements (19 minutes)
  2. Atoms and Elements, Part 2 of 6: What makes an atom itself (15 minutes)

You will not be doing any ADAPT homework this week. ADAPT will come back next week.

Week 7 (10/18/2024 – 10/25/2024) – Atoms and elements

For this week, to be prepared for class on 10/25, you will finish work on Chapter 4 – Atoms and Elements by reading section 4.5 (pages 118 – 121). You will also start chapter 5 – Electronic Structure of Atoms and the Periodic Table by reading sections 5.1 – 5.2 (pages 132-137).

Watch the following videos. During the videos, there are questions that are posed. It is highly, highly, highly suggested that you pause the video and take the time to try and answer the question before continuing. This will help you know how you are understanding the material. There is a big difference between watching someone solve a problem and solving it yourself!

  1. Atoms and Elements, Part 3 of 6: Measuring atoms and average mass (17 minutes)
  2. Atoms and Elements, Part 4 of 6: Where electrons live (22 minutes)
  3. Atoms and Elements, Part 5 of 6: Electrons on the move (13 minutes)

Start the ADAPT homework for Chapters 4 and 5. Do problems 1-5 for this week. The DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

Week 8 (10/25/2024 – 11/01/2024) – More on the periodic table

For this week, to be prepared for class on 11/01, you will finish work on Chapter 5 – Electronic Structure of Atoms and the Periodic Table by reading sections 5.3 – 5.5 (pages 138-156). If you understood the lecture on 10/25 on the organization of electrons into orbitals, you could reasonably skip reading sections 5.3 and 5.4. Personally, I find reading about the electron energy levels difficult to do.

There is no video to watch for sections 5.3 and 5.4. Those sections were covered during the lecture on 10/25. There is one video for the concepts in section 5.6.

  1. Atoms and Elements, Part 6 of 6: Periodic trends (9 minutes)

Note: Since this is a light week on videos, it is recommended that you get ahead and watch Compounds and Bonding, part 1, balancing charges (27 minutes) which is for next week. We won’t talk about it in class quite yet, but watching it now will help reduce your load for next week.

Finish the ADAPT homework for Chapters 4 and 5. Do problems 6-8 for this week. The DUE date is not the same thing as the DO date. DO it early!

Week 9 (11/01/2024 – 11/08/2024) – Ionic and Molecular compounds

For this week, to be prepared for class on 11/08, you will start work on Chapter 6 – Ionic and Molecular Compounds by reading sections 6.1-6.4 (pages 166 – 182).

Watch the following videos. These are longer videos, so it is OK to “chunk” them by watching a bit, taking a break, and watching more later. During the videos, there are questions that are posed. It is highly, highly, highly suggested that you pause the video and take the time to try and answer the question before continuing. This will help you know how you are understanding the material. There is a big difference between watching someone solve a problem and solving it yourself!

  1. Compounds and Bonding, part 1, balancing charges (27 minutes)
  2. Compounds and Bonding, part 2, naming ionic compounds (34 minutes)

Do the ADAPT homework for Chapter 6 – Ionic Compounds. Do all the problems. It is helpful to have a periodic table and a chart of common ions out and available. Next week the problems from Chapter 6 – Covalent compounds will be due.

On 11/08/2024 your first exam will be handed out. That will be your primary work for the week until November 15. The exam will cover Measurements, Matter and Energy, and Atoms and Elements.

Week 10 (11/08/2024 – 11/15/2024) – Ionic and Molecular compounds and Exam 1

The exam that you received on November 8 is due at the start of class on November 15.

There is also a bit of material that you need to do in order to prepare for class on November 15. Read section 6.5 (pages 183-186) and watch the following video:

  1. Compounds and Bonding, part 3, making and naming covalent compounds (18 minutes)

There is an ADAPT homework for Chapter 6 – Covalent compounds that has a whole one question in it – go ahead and do that one question for 11/15. There will be a short written homework that will help you with covalent compound naming.

Week 11 (11/15/2024 – 11/22/2024) – Chemical Quantities

The chemical quantities chapter is one of the most mathematically detailed chapters, but one of the more important concepts in chemistry. The material you are learning in this chapter allows you to take quantities that you can easily measure (such as mass in grams) and convert them to quantities that you can do chemistry with. The simple example is that you cannot know how many bicycles you can make from 150 pounds of wheels and 500 pounds of bike frames. But you know that you can make 10 bicycles from 20 wheels and 10 frames. This example isn’t perfect – it is very easy to count bicycle frames, so there is no need to weigh them. But atoms and molecules are SO INCREDIBLY TINY and there are SO INCREDIBLY MANY of them that you simply cannot count them. You must measure them in other ways, mass being a very common way.

To be ready for class on 11/22/2024 you should read Chapter 7 – Chemical quantities, sections 7.1 – 7.3 (pages 195 – 204).

Watch the following videos, being sure to stop and answer any questions that are posed during the videos.

  1. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 1 – counting in chemistry: The mole (16 minutes)
  2. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 2: How many moles in a mole? (17 minutes)
  3. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 3 – The weight mass of a mole (13 minutes)

The ADAPT homework for this week is for Chapter 7. Do the entire assignment, questions 1-7. The second half of Chapter 7 does not have an ADAPT homework set for it. That section will be only paper homework. If you need more time, you may extend the due date for the ADAPT homework until after Thanksgiving (12/06/2024).

Week 12/13 (11/22/2024 – 12/06/2024 (includes Thanksgiving break) – Chemical Quantities

To be ready for class on 12/06/2024 you will finish reading chapter 7, sections 7.4-7.6 (pages 205 – 214). There are no videos for this week, and we will go over the material in class. The homework for this week is the paper homework only (no ADAPT).

Week 14 (12/06/2024 – 12/13/2024)

(Note that this part was written after the fact. It is a summary of what happened so the record on this site is more complete.)

This week you should be preparing for lab #2 by getting your lab notebook ready.

Week 15 (12/13/2024 – 12/20/2024)

This week you should work on completing Exam #2 which is due 12/20/2024.

Week 16 – 18 (12/20/2024 – 01/10/2025) – Christmas break and Chemical Quantities

Happy New Year! To be prepared for class on January 10, 2025 you should continue reading in Chapter 8, sections 8.3 – 8.4 on chemical reactions. This content deals with the classification of reactions which we discussed in class. You should also complete homework #11 which was given out in class. Lastly you should complete the analysis for Lab #2.

There is one video to watch on the classification of chemical reactions (similar to the material covered in class. You could probably skip this video and be OK if you took notes during class and have all the classifications written down.)

  1. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 6 – Types of Reactions

Week 19 (01/10/2025 – 01/17/2025) – Chemical Quantities

To be prepared for class on 01/17/2025 you should read Chapter 9, sections 9.1 – 9.4. You should complete homework #12 which was given out in class.

There are several videos to watch for sections 9.1 – 9.3. There is currently no video for section 9.4 (limiting reactants), so you will get that information from the book and from class. Note that first first part of the first video (part 4) is material we have already covered.

  1. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 4 – Balancing reactions and mole to mole stoichiometry
  2. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 4b – Examples for mole to mole stoichiometry
  3. Chemical Quantities and Reactions, part 5 – Grams to Moles to Moles to Grams stoichiometry

Week 20 (01/17/2025 – 01/24/2025) – Chemical Quantities

To be prepared for class on 01/17/2025 you should read Chapter 9, sections 9.5 – 9.6. (Also read section 9.4 if you did not do so last week.) You should complete homework #13 which was given out in class.

There are no videos to go with the material this week. We talked quite a bit in class about percent yield, and a bit about energy. Use the textbook and the sample problems on the homework to help you understand the material before trying the regular homework problems.

There is no ADAPT homework due this week. The quiz will be on all of chemical quantities (since the last quiz … ahem … I forgot to hand out.) Including mole-to-mole, g-mol-mol-mol, limiting reactant, percent yield and energy (obviously it cannot include a question on each of those or it would be a test not a quiz! But limiting reactant problems require g-mol-mol-g, hint, hint.)

Week 21 (01/24/2025 – 01/31/2025) – Bonding, solids, and liquids

To be prepared for class on 01/31/2025, read sections 10.1-10.3 in the bonding, solids, and liquids chapter. This material is very dense and will likely require re-reading and watching the videos. But molecular structure and shape are at the core of why much of chemistry works, so the effort is worthwhile!

Please watch the following videos. Videos 2 and 3 below are only on YouTube. I was not able to get them on to this site. Please be careful when watching YouTube videos as I cannot control what ads it shows you or what videos it recommends or auto-plays afterwards.

  1. Compounds and Bonding, part 3, making and naming covalent compounds
  2. Using VSEPR theory to find shape (YouTube only)
  3. Practice drawing Lewis structures (YouTube only)

There is no ADAPT homework for this chapter.

Week 22 (01/31/2025 – 02/07/2025) – Bonding, solids, and liquids

To be prepared for class on 02/07/2025, read sections 10.4-10.7 in the bonding, solids, and liquids chapter. This material is very dense and will likely require re-reading and watching the videos. The parts about polarity and intermolecular forces are critical for understanding chemistry. You can do a lot of the math work in chemistry without understanding those topics, but if you really want to be able to understand chemistry, you have to understand polarity.

Please watch the following videos. Video #1 is only on YouTube. I was not able to get it on to this site. Please be careful when watching YouTube videos as I cannot control what ads it shows you or what videos it recommends or auto-plays afterwards.

  1. Identifying polar bonds and polar molecules (YouTube only)
  2. Matter and energy, part 5, heating and cooling curves
  3. Matter and energy, part 6 energy and changes of state

Week 23 (02/07/2025 – 02/14/2025) – Gases

To be prepared for class on 02/14/2025, read sections 11.1 – 11.6 (that’s a lot of sections, but the quantity of material is still reasonable.)

Watch the following videos:

  1. Gases part 1, About Gases
  2. Gases part 2, The Gas Laws

This week there is written homework and homework on ADAPT. For this week on the Gases ADAPT assignment you should do all problems except the last one (problems 1-7)

Next week you will receive exam #3 which will cover chemical reactions, chemical quantities, chemical structure (Lewis structures, geometry and shape, polarity), and heat of phase transitions.

Week 24 (02/14/2025 – 02/21/2025) – Gases and exam 3

In preparation for class on 02/21/2025 you will mainly be working on Exam #3. You should finish chapter 11, reading 11.7 – 11.9. There is only one video to watch this week:

  1. Gases part 3, Vapor pressure, molar volume, and partial pressure

There is no video that covers section 11.7 (the ideal gas law). We will cover that material in class on 2/14.

There is a short written homework and just one ADAPT problem (problem #8 on the gases assignment) for this week.

Week 25 (02/21 – 02/28/2025) – Lab 3 and solutions

Week 26 (02/28/2025 – 03/07/2025) – Lab 3 writeup

Week 27 (03/07/2025 – 03/14/2025) – Solutions

Week 28 (03/14/2025 – 03/21/2025) – Solutions

Week 29 (03/21/2025 – 03/28/2025) – Reaction Rates and Equilibrium

Week 30 (03/28/2025 – 04/04/2025) – Acids and Bases

Week 31 (04/04/2025 – 04/11/2025) – Acids and bases part 2, lab 4
